Amongst the plethora of gimmicks and rip-offs of Record Store Day, there’s still a few very welcome re-releases of some under-appreciated gems. This year, Fat Cat are issuing the Prospect Hummer EP on vinyl, a release which found Animal Collective – then very much in their freak-folk stage, fresh off the new-found attention that Sung Tongs had granted them – roping in singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan as a contributor. Prospect Hummer is very much Animal Collective’s show: a calmer, more meditative follow-up to the energy of Sung Tongs that retains its focus on experimenting with folk convention, but Bunyan’s vocals push these songs to great joyful heights. For paving the way for Bunyan’s subsequent return alone, Prospect Hummer deserves another moment in the spotlight.
