Agnes Obel’s third album sees the Danish songstress release her most consummately beautiful piece of work to date. Citizen Of Glass is true of the shimmering, spectral music it identifies.
There is an other-worldliness to Obel’s music (I listened to Mary on an aeroplane above the clouds and it felt exactly as if that was the landscape to which this music belongs). Celtic-tinged vocals sit atop sinister string and piano arrangements and, juxtaposed against Obel’s own tuned down vocals on songs like Familiar, the album sits comfortably as one of the most sonically intricate you’ll hear this year.
It is equal parts Nick Cave, Ludovico Einaudi and the Slits, and just as good as any of the aforementioned.
