Reliably informed

Welcome to A Week of Late Shows, where we’re looking a bit deeper at some of the amazing events happening across Newcastle and Gateshead after dark on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th May!

The Biscuit Factory

If you have a particularly sweet tooth, The Biscuit Factory is the place to be. Inspired by their recent discovery of drawings, menus and paraphernalia relating to the venue’s biscuit-making history, there’s a trove of sweet treats on offer. If you ever wanted to be a patissier then you can design your own confection to add to their giant plate mural. If you can suggest a unique, interesting and above all tasty concoction then it might end up on their next afternoon tea menu!

Author and illustrator Faye Hanson will also be on hand to help you create your own biscuit-inspired print for you to take home. There’s also freshly baked biscuits for you to decorate and eat, as well as live music on offer.

Ouseburn Fiesta @ Toffee Factory

Newcastle’s Toffee Factory are teaming up with the city’s one and only celebration of Spanish and Latin American Culture, VAMOS! to celebrate the UK’s Year of Mexico with a little taste of Mexican culture. The only female mariachi band in the UK – Mariachi Las Adelitas – will be coming to the venue to put on their own classic guitar and horn-based fiesta.

There will also be performances from new music collaboration MOVIDA, comprising of VAMOS! director Nik Barrera and Ladies of Midnight Blue musicians Hannabiell Sanders and Yilis del Carmen Suriel. So if you’re in the mood for something a little bit Latin American, go and enjoy the sights and sounds, as well as enjoying a cocktail (or two!)

Time Bandits @ The Cluny Inn/ Great North Museum: Hancock

Time Bandits are once again to transform the city into a historical wonderland! On Friday, visitors to the event meet at The Cluny Inn… or is that Victorian Whitechapel? One of the country’s first and most notorious serial killers is on the loose and is stalking the streets, and you can be witness to the bloody murders as they happen. Question is, can Holmes and Watson stop the killer’s deadly spree?

On Saturday the Time Bandits land at the Hancock and bring the Roman army to life on Hadrian’s Wall. Hordes of barbarians are forming north of the line and there’s discontent, treachery and assassinations on the other side. Governor Maximus has all these problems, yet still wants to become Emperor. Will he go to extreme measures to achieve his goal? Find out on the night…

Lawnmowers Theatre Company @ Swinburne House (Saturday 16th May only)

Want to enter the world of Gateshead’s Old Library, where pages turn, voices lead you up staircases and a room of instruments made of glass awaits you. After this magical world of sound and light, journey to a place where wordless memories open up a land of storytelling tradition. The Lawnmowers Theatre Company then take you to a room… where nibbles await! The perfect way to round off a magical experience.

With shows at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm, 9pm and 10pm, there’s plenty of opportunity to catch one of the performances!
